Meaning of Rath Yatra

Rath yatra is a mixture of two sanskrit words,those are Rath and Yatra.Rath means carriage of chariot and Yatra represents journey.

The Yatra
1.Before the yatra: A huge crowd comes to see the Yatra of Rath.The gods are bathed with 109 buckets which is known as Snana Purnima.Then they are worshiped and then they goes for isolation.Finally Chhera Pahara is performed which is a holy ritual.The grounds are also cleaned very carefully where cariots move.
2.After the Yatra: There comes a big fair and after that Ulta Rath is performed that is to move again to the first place where the Rath was.The carriots return to their places.
